The Aid to the Foreign Born Department provides an array of services to people who were born outside the United States and who need assistance because of language and other barriers. The Program was established in 1968 and it is funded by the Town of Hempstead.
DIRECT SERVICES
The languages barrier, the cultural clash and the lack of understanding of how the human services system works, limit the foreign born’s ability to function in the American society. Within the process of adapting themselves to the new way of living, the newcomers often feel alienated and isolated. Our program serives are designed to assist and help them in adjusting to the American culture. The department provides counseling and assistance in employment, housing, education, voter registration, consumer affairs, youth services, legal and social services. The department provides inter-agency referrals, as well as a link to a network of outside agencies.
The Aid to the Foreign Born Program specializes in Immigration and Naturalization services to qualified aliens. A complete screening is performed to determine a course of action in accordance with immigration procedure laws. Petitions for adjustment of status and permanent residency (family sponsored preferences) are filled out. Translation of all required documentation are prepared such as Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Divorce Decrees, Death Certificates and any other statements necessary to complete transmission to establish legal resident status to beneficiaries of U.S. citizens and legal aliens.
To the new naturalized U.S. citizen, assistance is given for U.S. passport and voter registration.
